I was very excited when I first learned of this lens…until I read a review of it. It’s the new Yongnuo 40mm f/2.8…an autofocus pancake lens. And it’s apparently a bit of a dog.

Just look at that slender profile, that distance scale, that MF/AF switch, that metal mount. The image quality is actually pretty good, but apparently the AF is rather hit or miss. And the construction? A bit on the cheesy side I’ve heard. All this, for under $90.00.

Hmm; plasticky, quirky, inexpensive…wait a minute…this is the Holga equivalent of an autofocus DSLR lens! I think I want one! Now I really am excited!

Yes, that’s a micro USB port, for updating the firmware. Maybe there is hope. But who cares if it hunts! Switch it to MF mode and have fun! I can’t wait to see how peeps will mod it!

Just like the original Holga 120S, whos aperture setting did absolutely nothing, this lens’s auto focus works so poorly as to be essentially non-functional. Perhaps someone will mod it to work more reliably, and post the steps for the next gen modders. Or, perhaps Yongnuo will fix it by then.
